The Pope Is Argentine

Argentina desperately needed a national hero and Bergoglio fills the bill. Congratulation Argentina.

I disagree. Argentina had too many "saviors" and "heroes" in its history, and I think that is a huge part of the problem. Argentina does not need heros. What Argentina needs desperately is the realization that development, justice and prosperity is all about individual responsibility individual initiative, individual accountability and mutual respect. We in South America don't need more "saviors", be it 'Che', CFK, Chavez, Lula ou Morales. What we need is understand that it is up to us to save ourselves.

I'd say that he is atypical of the Jesuits - not especially intellectual and far more conservative than most. I have never warmed to him. Like the Kirchners, he is a populist and authoritarian who has little tolerance for those who disagree with him. Like the Kirchners, he claims to represent the interests of the people. I'd say that with Bergoglio there is a good deal more sincerity than with CFK when it comes to this. Like the Kirchners, he can be opinionated and narrow minded. Rather than obey the former Pope's instructions to permit and encourage the revival of the Latin mass, he worked hard to suppress it in BA. He just didn't like it - and I suspect he has no soft spot for Benedict XVI - and used his authority to go against the Pope's wishes when it came to traditional liturgy. Expect someone with strong populist tendencies, an advocate of a kind of global socialism (Benedict actually is also highly anti-Capitalist) but a conservative on moral theology. He may open the door to married priests, though. i'm not sure where he stands on this. Most Catholics are not aware that celibacy is a discipline and a tradition but not a doctrine. The celibacy requirement can easily be lifted.

Little tolerance for those that disagree with him? This bishop was friends and participated in multiple unity meetings with Evangelical leadership (and got criticized for it by many people in the Catholic Church, I'm quite sure). That evangelical leadership has some major criticisms of the Catholic Church, and yet he humbly met with them and regards them as his Christians brothers and sisters. As far as that Latin mass goes, well, I sure hope he doesn't promote that. Who here speaks Latin? What a waste of time. Also, this is an extremely intelligent and rational person we're talking about here. I'm not sure where you got the idea that he is not an intellectual person. You must be intellectual to even get to the office of Pope, it requires a person with years and years of intellectual preparation, which Bergoglio has. Additionally, I have yet to hear him claim that he represents the interests of the people. Someone who protests and moves against homosexuality in this day and age does not care about what the people think.

Let's not forget what Peron did to the church in 1955 when many churches were burned down by Peronists after the church spoke against the government.
it was more complex than that. peron and the church close at the beginning became enemies later. things scalated to that point.
it all started with small things untill peron took away several privilegies the church had and passed legislation to allow divorce. after that there was no going back. after the bombing of the plaza by the navy the peronists burned churches as the catholic church was among the antiperonists. crazy times. when you think about stuff like that it all seems pink and fuzzy nowadays

That was the end of a period of deterioration of relations between Peron and the church, you seem to have skipped over a few details most notably the 'cristo vence' bombings of the Plaza de Mayo and attempted coup where over 300 people were killed.

Absolutely wrong. What Argentina needs are serious institutions that go beyond "heroism" and "individualism" (which are essentially the same thing).

From the Foothils of the Piamonte in Italy to La Pampa, Argentina.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Pope's family has its roots in the Piamonte near Asti, he loves agnolotti with Grignolino wine and the bagnacalda for dessert...!! speaks the Piamontese dialect.
His favorite movie," Babette's Feast " !!

I am practicing atheist. But if I were a catholic, I'd answer this question with: What would Jesus do?

Jesus did not preach a Pope that has absolute moral authority. The Pope is an invention of the Roman empire.

Bergoglio had no links with the dictatorship, Peace Nobel Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel

After looking into this story, it appears that the accusations leveled against Bergoglio are K propaganda. Should I believe a Nobel Prize winner, or Kirchnerist journalist? In fact, now some people from that period in time are coming out to defend him, and he's looking more and more like someone who stood up to the dictatorship.
