I've been renewing my Florida license since I left there. Since I don't have an address in Fla my license has my sister-in-laws address in Illinois. It's up for renewal again and I'm thinking that after 7 years this scheme might not be the best way to maintain a US license.

The easiest thing to do is to go online and renew my Fla license with the Illinois address.

Or I could make a special trip to Illinois and apply for a license there.

Or I could just use my Arg license whenever I'm in the US or elsewhere.

Or I could get an international license.

Any suggestions?

If you hold a Florida driver license that was issued in 2002 or later, you can renew in one of three ways: etc. etc.

......Am I Eligible to Renew Online?
Not everyone can renew their Florida driver license online. Florida drivers are allowed a one-time “convenience” renewal (meaning renewing online or by mail), but if you have already used one of these methods, you will be required to renew in person.

This is very unusual. I believe, when you move out of state, you are supposed to normalize your situation with driver license, car registration, etc. within three months. There are some exceptions for students and military personnel. Who knows maybe Florida is more relaxed in these matters.

You are likely to become a subject to Illinois's state taxes.

So called "International license" is actually a supplement to your regular license. US driving license is accepted worldwide anyway.

I'm in a similar situation, my Florida license expires next year in February, I was using my aunt's address in Florida and when I got the license the first time there was this legal document that said if I don't actually live there I'm committing some kind of fraud crime. A little unsettling for a good catholic boy like me. I have been living in Argentina full time since 2000. I was thinking about getting an international license to be "legal" but it sounds like that is only a supplement and you need to have another license issued by a state government to get the international license. I saw this website on instagram https://internationaldriversassociation.com but if it's only a supplement and not a replacement license, it's not worth getting. I don't drive in Argentina, I only use my license when I travel to the USA to rent cars. MilHojas in the previous post above says it's only a supplement, can anyone else confirm if this is true or if an international driver's license is an actual legal "standalone" license.

Thanks!

The international drivers license given by the US AAA is no more than a supplement. As a current or past US resident, they should be your best reference for questions about international drivers license. Contact them to ask. In 2005 the one I was given was really just a booklet of many languages that a foreign police officer could read to learn the international agreements allowing a foreign tourist to drive in their country. Valid for 3-6 months if I recall correctly. It is very close to meaningless. must show US state license as well. I would not trust the website you link for anything, and certainly not for driving in the USA. I would just renew the FL license without concern.

AAA is 1 of only 2 organizations authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue International Driving Permits in the United States. AAA issues IDPs to the public; you don't need to be a member to get an IDP from AAA.

Apparently you can renew your Florida driver's license online if you meet certain eligibility requirements, such as not having renewed online in your last renewal period and being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. If eligible, you can use the MyDMV Portal to complete the renewal process.
If you can not renew online, you should consider getting an Argentine drivers license. Some car rental companies claim to require an international permit, but most never ask to see it. The international permit is easy to obtain at the Automovil Club @ Av. del Libertador 1850. They cost about $35 and I think they're good for one year. Don't waste your money with online international permit companies. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not a scam, but there are many fraudulent websites that sell fake IDPs. It's important to obtain an IDP from authorized organizations like the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) to avoid scams.

If you are referring to the AAA "international" license, it's my understanding that it's just a translation of the your US Drivers license. That's why you have to show AAA a valid US license to get it.

Unless you need a US license for banking or business purposes I would just get an Argentine one and be done with it. You still have a US passport for identification purposes.

I got an IDP for my Argentine license at ACA Palermo last week. $7000 ARS and it's good for a year.

I just renewed my FL DL online (am in FL atm). On the website it said I can renew every other time.

The international driver's license is always a supplement to your valid driver's license, wherever you are living. If you have a valid Argentine license and wish to drive in other countries, ACA (Automobil Club Argentino) may issue one for you.
