Western Union money transfer

FYI, I just made my first Western Union transfer of $1,000 USA to my ARG account today Oct 31, 2024, the rate was 1155.8300 (yesterday it was 1149). There was a $54.99 transfer fee but was waived to $0.00 I think because it was my first transfer. Before I made the deposit it said it would be deposited within 0-8 days and then stated the deposit as Nov 7, 2024 after I made the transfer.

I logged into Remitly and the rate was:
1,069.25 ARS
+ $2.99 transfer fee

xoom.com was:
1,082.5941 ARS for $25.00
1,093.5294 ARS for $1,000.00
+ $0.00 transfer fee

We'll see what happens when I try and make another transfer with Western Union, I assume the transfer fee won't be waived, so I'll have to run the numbers to see which is the best value.

I also had to look up Nampe wines on MercadoLibre, never heard of this winery before, is this considered like "2 Buck Chuck" at Trader Joes?

Cheers!

Pete

Or you can try to make a new western union account to have the first transfer free again.

I thought of that since I'm on a joint account with my husband, make a new login under his name, but don't know how good their software is for checking such things. Also, looking for long term best options, even though we know in Argentina things change daily. Also mentioned on this forum were some Crypto currency exchangers like DolarApp but I have no experience with Crypto so I'm hesitant to try it. Remitly.com gave me a great rate about a month ago but now seems like WU and xoom.com may be better.

Hi Pete, I have been using Remitly successfully for 2 years. The benefit to me is the rapid deposit. It can take as fast as 5 minutes, typically 20. Yesterday it said upfront 4 hours, I think they do a periodic review. It's $4.99 a transaction for me, and a lesser blue rate.

I was very happy with my Remitly exchange a month or so ago, I forget but I think they said it was 4-5 business days for the transfer. Maybe it depends on the bank, or maybe because they needed to verify something as it was only my 2nd transfer and my first transfer was 2 years ago. Maybe after it's been verified the transfers go faster. I was just surprised it was a better rate then xoom and then when I looked on this current transfer xoom was a better rate, and WU was even better. It's good to have options in case of emergencies and you never know when transfer laws will change. I chatted with an online rep at Remitly, they have a 24 hour online chat which I think is a sign of a "real" respectable business, and asked them about transfer limits, there is a per transfer limit of $7,000 USA per day, $14,000 USA per month and $84,000 USA per year, more then enough for living expenses, so I'm happy to have this "safety" cushion where I can get money at a reasonable rate if I need it.

MoneyGram also delivers to your Arg bank in a couple hours, or to Mercado Pago in 15 or 20 minutes, and usually the rate is better than the others after factoring in fees. Transfers to Arg bank have US$2 flat fee; transfers to Mercado Pago have zero fee and better rate than transfer to bank.

Thanks for the recommendation on MoneyGram, will check them out if my next WU transfer has a large fee! I just checked out MoneyGram.com and it looks like you have to go to a MoneyGram Agent location to do the transfer? You can't do this online? Or is it just that you have to go to the MoneyGram Agent location the first time to verify your identity? Can you clarify the process with using MoneyGram? Thanks!

You can do it all online. They've changed their user interface a few times since I signed up so I don't know what it looks like when you're trying to get started, but I know someone who was able to sign up online a few weeks ago.

FWIW: The fee for recently added transfer to pago facil wallet is currently significantly lower than cash pickup or bank transfer, also for lager amounts. Creating the wallet is very easy and seems worth the time. The transfer is also much faster, within hours or even minutes, I did it just once and did not pay much attention on how long it took.
Is this true only for first time transfer or subsequent transfers to pago facil also have significantly lower fee? Can you check again and see how much the fee is? Thanks
