I was going to paste a picture of my kids the last time we had a volcano explode around here. But I can't figure it out. That one was much closer though. Let's hope that the wind is towards the Pacific this time. Apparently people are stocking up on fuel and food. I did see the plume when I came home today, but no sign of any fallout yet.

Noooooooooooo I have a trip planned to Bariloche in a couple weeks. I hope it's cleared by then.
(I also hope the residents aren't too inconvenienced by this.)

Ashes over Bariloche this eve

I can confirm that there are ashes falling over the area. Just fine dust though. The municipality websit advices us not to panic... I will fill up the bathtub with water just in case.

the season pass was AR$18,300 last year.

Yikes! Is this just for the high season (2nd half of July) or is this for the WHOLE season? Do you know where are these prices posted?

For local flights; if it's the same as it used to be (havent seen many comments about it recently) then purchase your ticket and check-in online and travel with no hold luggage so you can go straight to the gate and don't need you show your id at the check-in desk.

We are flying international to BsAs so we will have luggage, ski gear, etc. Does this mean we are stuck paying prices posted in US$? (The US$ rate is almost twice the price of AR$ tickets at almundo.com using the Blue rate for conversion...about $450 round trip.)

IF we can somehow check luggage, how do we buy tickets in pesos? Do we need to get a ARG bank account and credit card?

Rental cars are currently about $3000 - $4000 per week, although I'm sure you would get a discount for a 4 month rental.

Do we need a car if we live in town and take the bus to the mountain? It seems from this thread that we can purchase an ARG plated car as long as we don't drive it into Chile.

$18,300 for the whole season. Here are last years prices: http://www.pinamar-bariloche.com.ar/tarifariocerrocatedral.php so add 20-30% to get this years rates. The 2015 rates will probably appear on the Cerro Catedral Website (http://www.catedralaltapatagonia.com/invierno/) towards the end of May.

If you aren't physically in Argentina then you can't purchase flights at the resident/pesos rate. There are other threads (use the search box) on purchasing international flights in Argetina in pesos.

If you are staying in the center then are hourly buses to the ski resort, $10 one way, The buses are always full during high season (standing room only); but it's an option, one that I used before I purchased a car.

Volcanic ash started falling in central Bariloche at 11pm last night, but in general we has received very little, there is a very light dusting on the ground. There is an ash cloud in the air and I have the lights on as home as the amount of sun light getting through is reduced. There is also a smell of sulphur in the air!

The Puyehue volcano eruption of 2011 left 3cm's of volcanic ash in downtown Bariloche, so this is nothing in comparison (at least for Bariloche) and I expect the town to be back to normal soon - assuming the volcano stops erupting and spewing ash into the air.
