What Would Dollarization Mean for Expats?

Nooo! Let's keep it going. At the moment we've got two threads running simultaneously, one filled with extraordinary claims of people having direct connections to Bill Gates, and the other with tales of individual conquests in prodigious numbers of Latin American women from Mexico to Colombia to Brazil to Argentina.

Let's see where they both ultimately lead...

(I've met three serving heads of state, and two former heads of state. One of them confused me for being the Crown Prince of Tonga, as did the welcoming party behind him of performers who then came threateningly at me with spears before I explained the Prince was coming down the plane staircase behind me. True.)
We need the colombian wives to kill Mr Kill Gates a la Sharon Tate. i feel this is the only solution.

I have gotten several emails from various Nigerian princes...(cough)

I’ve been a couple of feet away from Kristina outside her house in El Calafate.

Also been to a former Vice Presidents and almost President’s house.

He is a loon. An entitled man-child. And there is a lot of unexplored baggage in his past. Where did the money come from to pay for 3 private university degrees, if his father was a "bus driver"?
A dead giveaway for trouble is his constant need to discuss his penis- it comes up in a lot of his interviews, along with "free love", "tantric sex instructor" and the clue of no acknowledged girlfriends, pretty much ever. Anybody who likes to talk about it so much always ends up showing it to people who dont want to see it...
And whats up with Cloning his dog? Thats Musk level crazy, right there.
Menem at least gave us his fastest ever Ferrari ride to MDQ.
This guy will end up going down in flames, having started the fire himself.

I really hope that he becomes the president, it would be very very entertaining.

That said, a few things. One, the guy is obviously a hardcore Yukio Mishima or Pim Fortyn-style homosexual, a true aesthete ultra right type who will end up erecting beaux arts-style buildings and deriding the drift into "ugliness" when he's the president. The key questions around his tenure - which seems all but certain, if you look at the numbers - are around his appointments, his management of the ministries, and his interaction with the Congress. On the first, I'm guessing it will be a mix of attractive gay men with no qualifications, hardcore right wing economist types he plucks out of obscurity, celebrities, and the odd defector from the regular center right. The second is an open question, nobody knows but him. The third is a very interesting question that could change politics forever in the country - will the regular right fall in line, such that Milei-ism becomes the right wing in Argentina? I think it's very possible.

Wild times. And, god help me, Milei could be good for Argentina?

So he said that the GOVERNMENT would not do business with China? That is another matter it seems to me. WHY, for example, did Argentina have to buy trains from China when Spain could have supplied them?

Yes - it's in this video. At 12 minutes he clarifies it - "Será socios comerciales del sector privado". I don't know anything about the trains

Because the last time Argentina bought trains from the Spanish, they were contaminated with asbestos, and the issue has been a source of labor unrest among the maintenance workers ever since? Maybe?

The usual Google Translate deal, banner is in Castellano and story will initially appear in that tongue, but wait a few seconds and it will change to English.

**excerpt**

On the other hand, because although the trains were manufactured between 1998 and 1999 -prior to the prohibition of asbestos in Spain, which dates back to 2001-, their sale to the Subte took place in 2013, when this material was already prohibited not only there but also in Argentina.

In addition, the CAF 6000 are not the only fleet with asbestos that SBASE acquired after the ban on the importation of the material: the CAF 5000 (also former Madrid Metro) also fall into the same category, which have already been irradiated, and the Nagoya 5000 (former Nagoya Metro), which will be reinstated once the deforestation work has progressed .

Argentina Castellano and Google Translate don't always get along. The word translated as "deforestation" above actually means the removal of asbestos. As far as "radiado" which is translated as "irradiated", I have no idea.

The really annoying part is that it's not the ancient cars from Fiat and Fabrica Militar that had the damn asbestos, but the newer 90's vintage ones.

That long ago China was probably using asbestos. I was referring to Argentina's purchase of very basic NEW, not used intercity trains from China

Milei does seem a bit mentally unstable, but what's the alternative?

Massa and the Ks? People who have proven to be inept, loons, and thieves.

As privileged gringos making dollars, we can laugh at his free love and tantric sex nonsense, but for much of the country who can't even afford to buy a kilo of meat they want a better economy. They couldn't care less about his sex life or his dogs.

Maybe Milei goes does in flames, definitely possible, but we've tried the alternative the Ks and Jxc and they've set the country on fire already.

I know nothing about his ideas regarding "tantric sex" and I don't care. We could make fun of lots of politicians for their personal idiosyncrasies. A reporeter once saw Viagra in De La Rua's desk drawer. That resulted in endless mocking articles. Ridiclous. I paid little attention to Milei until recently because just about everything being reported was negative and I took him for a crank. Now I am looking seriously at what he says. The interview here reveals a man who is highly intelligent and knowledgeable. His hair may look eccentric but so what? He's actually discussing serious issues in a serious way. He may at times be histrionic but in this interview he makes it clear that his comments about destroying the Banco Central are metaphor. He wants it closed and he explains why. He also says that if Congress opposes dollarization he wants a plebiscite. That seems democratic to me. Reply Guy, you are 100% right about expats with dollars who are comfortable and don't know how most people live. I know someone who works hard but her salary is so poor that she cannot make the most humble ends meet. She is desperate for a place to live. She is just one of millions whose lives have been upended by disastrous policies and self-centered politicians. I don't know if Mieli's ideas would work but I want a real debate. I'd like to hear why the opposition think they are right and he is wrong. And I believe we should be open-minded and be willing to listen. And as for the comment that Mieli has no girlfriends, I can only say SO WHAT? I know that you did not make the comment, Reply Guy, but it was a really below-the-belt insulting remark. I will say no more.
