Argentine citizenship for foreigners?

I stopped by the court a couple weeks ago. The secretary told me I simply needed to wait until they called me (possibly in Februray but not before). She said they would then tell me exactly what I need to publish in the newspaper. They will provide the copy. I will provide the payment.

The only thing I know about the process (for sure) in the past year is that the Policia Federal called me to have my fingerprints taken.

In the past year someone postred that migraciones was going to require those with temporary residency spend no less than six months of the year in country. If they don't their visas would not be renewed.

Recently this happened. The renewals were denied.

Steve, have you had any recent updates from the court? If I recall correctly you began your tramite in February so we are coming up on a year pretty soon. Also do you know what it is they are doing during the year+ that takes so long? I read something about publishing in the newspaper. Does that mean they publish your name in the paper to find out if anyone comes forward to dispute your eligibility? I'm just really curious about what goes on behind the scenes once the process begins.

Edited to add: maybe Bajocero can chime in too!

well, the procedure is like a criminal investigation about you. That s why you don t have to do so much but to wait. There are 2 reports that takes long time: renaper and policia interjurisdiccional. They delay about 7 months to be replied. Sometimes they just don t reply them and they have to send them again but then the case takes another extra 7 months. Here is where is important how efficient are the employeds at Court.

It s important to be watching how the reports are being replied after the 4th month.

These 2 reports delays the procedure while the law stablished a 3 months deadline. I already convinced the prosecutors that the renaper report is useless for irregulars. Regarding PI, i am debating about that at SC.

I suggest you Steve to ask about what reports lacking. Regards

I was at the office of the court recently.

The secretary told me to wait until they call me.

That's all I know and that's all I need to know.:)

Trust me, they are delayed. So, go on February and ask which report are they waiting. Also ask if the prosecutor ask for the FBI CR.

Regards

Ok, thanks.

I have permanent residecny and I really don't worry about citizenship.

I started this as a project but I also have a sincere desire to obtain citizenship as I have no desire to leave Argentina.

When I submit my documents I am going to offer the previous FBI report which includes my fingerprints (unless someone think that's a bad idea).

Don't worry. They will take what they want...and tell you what they need.

I suggest you don t.
If the prosecutor ask for it, he wants a new one. So, it is better to ask about it. Where have you applyied (jurisdiction) and with which Judge?

Regards

Hopefully this will help although I have not achieved citizenship, I do have an attorney and am working toward that end.

I am a permanent resident (legal) of Argentina. I thought you could apply two years after permanent. It takes three years to achieve permanent status and that would be five years, which made sense to me since 5 years to citizenship is pretty standard for countries. But that was wrong information.

Today I learned that Argentina is not "standard." My attorney tells me I was eligible in 2009. You are eligible after two years of residency. He did tell me some people want to apply when they have been illegal in the country for two years and that's on the difficult side. He did not say impossible and I didn't pin him down since I have been strictly legal.

He told me you have to live here at least six months of the year. The other people I hired who helped me through my residency told me not to be out of the country more than 30 days in any one year period. I was denied permanent residency because of not being in Argentina much of that year so I am sure it is an issue. Since I am currently applying I will play it safe and stay in Argentina until it is finished.

For the person who wants to know why anyone would want Argentina citizenship, some people are not just here for the tango or to have a couple years adventure. We LIVE here. And there are disadvantages to having only a US passport for those who are serious. I could elaborate but enough said.

Supposedly it will take about 10 months for it to complete. For those who are interested, I will be sure to tell you if I hit any barricades on the way.

Also I don't remember who on this forum recommended Gabiel Celano as an immigration attorney. If I did I would send that person a special thank you. I really like working with him.
