Buenos Aires Needs A Red Light Zone

Khairyexpat - this is NOT fair - I've been here more than 4 years now and not been propositioned once :( Maybe I hang out in the wrong places...

I've had to take the 130 a few times in the last couple of months and by now I'm less shocked about it. As a sidenote, in Spain they were having a lot of trouble --especially in Barcelona-- because prostitution, especially (but not exclusively) from African immigrants, was getting out of control, with public exposure evolving into public sex. This newspaper report and picture (may be a bit graphic for sensitive readers) made the front page of most major newspapers, and was the turning point for authorities doing something about it, especially since it was half a block from world-famous Boqueria market. When I ran out of the Bosques between the trees, that's what came to mind, that I would come across or close to someone who decided to save money on a telo and put green spaces to "good use". Thankfully it hasn't gotten that far, at least not in Palermo.

Ive been to Barcelona about 30 times since 6 years ago, and saw something similar to this every single time. Transvestites fighting over customers in broad daylight, in the middle of the center. Coming from Amsterdam, where the red light district has always made me sad but never shocked me, i was quite surprised to run into a scene like that.

On a side note:
prostitution in Argentina is legal.
pimping out someone is not.
however, prostitution is not regulated (there are no mandated medical check ups like in some parts of Europe).

Prostituion isn't legal, but it's not exactly illegal either. It's a gray area. It's the equivalent of a traffic violation. Pimping however is definitely illegal which is why ALAMEDA and Macri worked together to close the brothels around the city. The most prolific red zone being none other than the posh area of Recoleta.
