Lamb, I hope this doesn't come off in the wrong way, but how long have you been here? Like they say, "everyone feels safe until something happens." When I first arrived, I was blissfully unaware of the crime problem, and kind of wrote off the warnings of my Argentine friends who told me how clever the thieves are here (thinking, "whatever, I'm from NYC, same thing.") Thanks to decent street smarts and a little luck, nothing ever happened to me, but the more I became immersed in the local culture (listening to the stories of long-time BA residents, witnessing street muggings and pickpockets, catching waiters who tried to shortchange me), the more I realized that the crime situation is real. So basically, while I don't feel targeted, I'm aware that this city is home to many, many thieves who always are looking for a target.

I was here for 2 months, 2 months again, and now 7 months. Ive heard stories, and of course believe them to be true, but i just meant to say that in general i dont feel unsafe here.

I think pizza in Los Eternos HAS to be mentioned (the BEST I have ever tasted) and then there is the ASADO - I've got another one to go to this week - the ASADO is an experience in itself (apologies in advance to any vegetarians on the list) - its just the most amazing food experience I have ever had :) In Australia we have BBQs - but the Asado is a whole new ball game...:) Oh - did I mention Dulce de Leche Frappucinos ? Love'em...

Hi there!
I lived in USA as a teenager and there I saw someone smoking pot for the very first time. I was an expat in Indonesia as an adult and I was distubed by people taking pictures of me and my family.
Here in BA things can be dangerous if you are not careful, but if you get good advise and you don't show off, you won't have a single problem. If you dress with what you buy here in Argentina, people won't be able to tell if you are really an expat (until they hear you speaking)... you can easily blend in the crowd.
I don't know where you will be staying at, but the northen suburbs (Zona Norte, near San Isidro) is a very safe area.
Don't worry too much, you will see that if you are open minded you will enjoy your experience here!
Good luck!

I agree. It makes me think of some of the BA weddings I attended--soooooooooooooo much fun.
80s music is everywhere! even the one hit wonders I never even heard of:)

Ah, somebody from the US told me that he loves the radio stations in BA, because you can listen to a lot of different music from different years in one hour, and back at home the stations are only promoting the same five Justin Bieber songs all the time.
