Can Someone Tell Me the Good Stuff?

The difference being that in the US, I know what areas to avoid to be relatively safe. In Chicago, avoid the South Side. In DC, avoid the Green line.

Maybe off topic a bit, but I ride the Green line regularly back in DC. Never a problem. "Avoid the green line" is usually translated as "don't ride the Green line because it is full of black people", which, I'm sure was not what shawns meant.

But,and it is a big but, people are friendly and they will help you. If you are getting robbed in a bus and you scream thief, poor guy. Some people will be worried that the guy in question has a weapon, but some of them will beat the shit out of him regardless of the consequences. The only time I was robbed at gunpoint in my life, in La Boca, a local neighbour did go out with a gun and told the robber that if he stayed there for one second more he would die, "and never try this again in this neighbourhood!". I lost 20 pesos, but I was proud that people would risk their life for me only because they don´t like this sort of stuff happening in their street.

I've been here two days, and I didn't realize the "dangers" BA had until I started reading this forum last night.

After reading some stories, I have to say my impression is BA is a much less safe city than many in the US. The difference being that in the US, I know what areas to avoid to be relatively safe. In Chicago, avoid the South Side. In DC, avoid the Green line. Super easy. Here, it seems that a mugger is waiting for you on every corner - at least that's the impression I get from reading several crime threads...

That is why I don't read too many of these posts. While I think it is horrible to be in such a situation, I also think it is the 'one in a million' chance (pardon the exaggeration ;o). After all Buenos Aires is a huge city and the likelihood of posting a story about something bad that happen to you is many times higher than telling that you had a fabulous day in BA. So just enjoy your stay and take the usual precautions!

I let my kids ride public transport here, alone. NO biggie.
Of course, my kids dont have rolexes or I phones- they dont come down much, they are teenagers who instinctively dont want to do what their parents like- but when they do come, I give em 50 pesos and they hit the subte, buying super panchos and cokes at hypermaxisuper kiosks, buying ten peso necklaces for their girlfriends from ladies with blankets on the street, and just bumming around the microcento.
They dont have anything to steal, so they get left alone, english or no english.

No, they dont go on foot into Villas, of course. But I worry a lot less about my kids walking down Florida than I would in the real Florida, in, say, downtown Miami...

My kids are veterans, though- when they were 10 and 13, they would wander off for the day on the Tokyo subway, they have been able to buy sugar products without speaking the language in a dozen countries over the years.
Argentina is pretty mellow for kids, though, as long as you are not flaunting ridiculous wealth.

Exactly.

The media etc. report of somebody who was shot to death, but never report of those 12,999,999 who weren't.

"This place is great with kids. Don't know what it's like where you live now, but in NZ if you went to a restaurant at dinner time with 3 kids in tow, you'd get the evil eye from all other diners and waiting staff. Here, everything is geared up for kids. THere's a row of highchairs in just about every restaurant, the waiters pay you far more attention because they come to visit with the children. "

Somehow I don't find it a pleasure to go out and have to put up with whining, crying kids. Those irritated New Zealanders have a good reason for giving the evil eye.
