Cristina's culpability in the financial crisis and if capital controls will work under the peronists

Corruption and and outright thievery are not OK, whoever commits it. But, to cite just one example, when a whistleblower revealed that Macri's brother took advantage of his brother's 'sinceramento fiscal' to launder 34 million dollars of hot money, I didn't see headline splashes about "Corrupción M" in Clarín. To be fair, La Nación published a little side piece on how an IT technician had been sacked for revealing tax secrets, but no details...

I think it should be clear to everyone who has lived for some time in this country that corruption is endemic across Argentine society. But the media here prefer to reveal corruption as if searching for it with a fine torch in a dark room, without ever just turning the light on and looking around.

Respectfully, I don't think that the 'he inherited a mess"/"pesada herencia" idea bears scrutiny. Macri inherited a country with no foreign debt, with poverty on a downward trajectory. Certainly the country had a range problems, but he didn't inherit a country in default, or with a mountain of debt or a run on the currency and millions pushed into poverty. In fact it was Nestor Kirchner who stabilised the country after the 2001 default. The history of Argentina in the last 40 years has been one of the "pesada herencia" of financial meltdowns, runs on the currency etc. created by the Menems and Macris of this world.

I'm not seeking to promote any particular line, but I think that the lessons from Macri's government are clear for Argentines, and that it's obvious why Alberto Fernandez will stomp home.

ask yourself these questions:

why was it macri didn't inherit a mountain of debt?
why was poverty lower? how were those social programs being paid for?
why do you think the exchange rate was "stable" during the K years?

FF probably will win, because unfortunately the population wants "futbol para todos" and subsidized electricity and on and on.

It appears "veteran" Perry a good dancer: he dances around any question calling out his obvious dislike of Macri and his admiration (or love affair) of Nestor and Christina. Which bank I worked for is irrelevant. You posting your drivel, then deflecting, speaks volumes.

I post under my real name but you like the coward you are post under a alias . Once again I voted for Macri so there was no dislike for him . Yes I was very disappointed in him . Is that clear for you ?

No Macri did not inherit a mountain of debt . Poverty was lower not because of social programs but because there was much more employment and the cost of living was lower . Today most working class people are poor due to the very high costs to maintain a dignified lifestyle . This has absolutely nothing to do with the social programs which comprise of a very small portion of the budget .
The exchange rate was never stable under the previous governments but wage increases were uniform helping people keep up with inflation and devaluation .

Argentinian people are returning to the past not because of subsidised electricity and futbol para todos . This is a insuilt to the intelligence of the people here . How much suffering can a family take in the name of what? The country has been ruined in a mountain of debt and the central bank reserves dwindled to nothing . Why are you not talking about this instead of deflecting with silly comments . Using the central bank reserves to prop up the peso was never recommended by the IMF . The economy was terribly mismanaged and for this reason people want to return to some stability .

Ok, I agree Macri hasn’t done well. But he inherited a mess. But to provide an op-Ed by Mark Weisbrot as a balanced view of the Kirchner regime?? Check out Mr. Weisbrot’s defense of Chavez and Maduro in Venezuela...this guy is a hard core socialist with very one sided views.

Thank you for your voice of reason on this topic . I do not always agree with you but this debate lacks common sense . The previous government did not take on any debt and Nestor paid back the imf . Yes the last years of Kristina goverment were not the best but compared to now it seems like a paradise . This is a reality for most argentinians and this is why they are returning to the devil they know .

I am sure that they committed corruption but the current government are saints ?
Remember Macri like Donald Trump are billionaires does anyone believe they got this rich by following decency ?

By the way I have been called ridiculuous things on this forum and one of these is that I am a peronist . I was born in a conservative family and respect those beliefs I am not a admirer of left wing governments nor or their radical policies . There are many countries in the world that are capitalist but respect their citizens . What has happened in Argentina in the last years has been a savage capitalism that has decimated the middle class and has been the main catalyst of the current situation we are in . As stated before I voted for Macri hoping for a positive change but like most people we were left with egg on our faces .

I do not believe that the new government will be able to revert this situation as the foreign debt will not be able to be paid . The central bank reserves have been dwindled to nearly nothing and Argentina is in dire straits . All of the money that Macri borrowed was not spent wisely nor was it accounted for in any manner . Maybe you can enlighten us where the money went that he borrowed from the IMF ?
So the new government will not be able to revert the problems caused by Macri? Fair enough, I agree that four years is not enough time to do that.

Why is it different for Macri, who only had four years to solve the problems left by the previous government?

Yet again, you are making it a partisan argument. I will repeat because you seem to be struggling, I don't care about Macrismo or Peronismo and would not vote for either, but your logic is flawed. I know Macri took out a massive loan with the IMF, a move that seemed destined to fail from day one considering Argentina's past. I also know Macri has failed in most things he set out to do. Why you are acting like your observation of these facts is revolutionary? You're stating the obvious as if you're catching people out or enlightening them.

Again, for your ego, Macri has failed. What has that got to do with Argentina's systemic failures, other than being a continuation of them under a different political slant?
