Driving in Argentina. International License??

I have uk driving licence and was stopped a few years back, i was told i need a international licence even with the blue ticket thing which i have for my gfs car. I get my before i come out here every year from the uk post office it costs me £5 and they do it there and then.

U.S. driver's licenses are valid in the capital and the province of Buenos Aires, but Argentine or international licenses are required to drive in the rest of the country.

I was very recently stopped on my first day out in the car. Produced the international license, irish license and the cedula azul (wasn't my car). There was no issues at all, very friendly police too, on my way in 5 mins ; ) This happened at a routine checkpoint in Capital.

Queso is right.
I am driving here with my CT license and I have not had much of an issue. One cop on a control vehicular clearly wanted a bribe and said it was not valid. My reply was. Through international agreements my any driver's license issued by another country is valid for a year, and since I have been in Argentina for only six months it was still valid. But, if he thought I was braking the law I would gladly pay the fine and call my lawyer to contest it. Had he asked me for my DNI or any proof of my time of entry to the country, I would have been in trouble, but he let me go. Feel free to use that line, which is true, as many times you'd like.
Cheers

I use nothing but my California license in Argentina and Chile, and have never had a problem. I used to get an international license, but don't bother any more.

I have to update my previous post. I called Direccion General de Licencias to verify if indeed a U.S. driver's license is valid here. If you're a tourist renting a car it's fine, or you can get an international driver's license. If you have residence in Buenos Aires and a DNI and you are driving with a U.S. driver's license and get stopped the police, if in a bad mood, will give you a ticket. I'm in the process of getting my Argentine driver's license. My concern is not the ticket the police could give you, but if insurance will cover you in the event of an accident if you don't possess an Argentine driver's license.

It depends on what country drivers license are you holding if you have a US valid license No issue , ,A Swiss no issue , you need to look for the specific country I drove here before with both no issue the easiest way to find out is go to a rental car office ( Hertz , Avis ) ask for a quote and tell then what driver licence are you holding .
If you tell then you need a reservation for a couple of months ahead and the driver licence you are holding is an issue they will tell you how to fix it ..........if it can be fixed

I have a DNI and a US driver's license. A month or so ago, a motorcycle hit me. I made the claim and the insurance company, La Caja, insists that they will not be held responsible because my license is not valid. However, I've been stopped by the police on 2 or more occasions, never with a problem. Also, when I had my old car, and the insurance company was La Segunda, I had a minor accident, and my license was not a problem. I'm trying to find out what is the real policy.

I believe there is an English version of the local driving test , if anyone has it , I would like a copy.

Was driving in Cordoba province and forgot to put on my headlights , where it is mandatory, and was stopped by the police. SHowed them my Florida drivers license , and they really did not know what to do. Never asked for an International . In the end I slipped him 50 pesos , and he said thanks , have a nice day !!

"No es tu foto, señor." "No...es Domingo Sarmiento." "Bueno! Chau, gracias!"
