Agree with everything you say, and would add just one thing: it does seem that the socialist/communist left's rhetoric always stresses love for the common man more than rightist regimes. In other words, the hypocrisy is greater as they impose their police state and enslave the population in the name of compassion for the victims. But a police state is a police state and it matters little in the end to the enslaved whether their masters call themselves left or right.

I wish I could remember where I first heard it but the greatest relevant insight is this: left and right at their oppressive extremes are not opposite ends of a straight line: it's a circle where "left" and "right" merge at the point where human freedom is extinguished.
