Free Concerts In Buenos Aires

Where can you view an exhibition by a French artist, attend a dress rehearsal of a new tango show, and hear an orchestral concert in three hours? La Usina del Arte. I saw the poster exhibit by graphic artist Michel Bouvet, Leonardo Cuello's new tango show in the sala de camara, and the Orquesta Filarmonica de Buenos Aires perform Mozart, Rachimaninoff, and Tschaikovsky tonight.

I heard a jazz quintet at the Confiteria Hotel Castelar on Saturday night and the Mozart Requiem at the Gran Rex on Wednesday afternoon.

All it cost me was bus fare to and from the venues. I love being retired in Buenos Aires.

My agenda is filled with cultural activities in this great city. I saw a French comedy film on Tuesday at Alliance Francaise, danced at a milonga on Wednesday, had coffee with friends on Thursday and Friday, walked the path around the lake in Parque 3 de Febrero on Saturday, heard the Filarmonica Orquesta de Buenos Aires on Saturday night in La Usina del Arte play an American composers program, heard the Neuquén Symphony on Sunday morning at Teatro Colon, and danced at a milonga on Sunday night.

Wednesday is another concert in the Mozarteum Argentina at the Gran Rex. Thursdays this month offer a series in CC Recoleta at 19 hs.

I had the Teatro Colon orchestra concert at La Usina del Arte on my agenda for Saturday night until I heard about the dress rehearsal of Swan Lake at Teatro Colon that is open to the public. It meant going early Saturday morning to wait in line for two tickets. Saying the ballet is popular here is an understatement; it may be even more popular than tango. The line went completely around Teatro Colon. I waited from 8:20 to 10:10am to get two tickets in the fifth balcony (Tertulia). Then we were in line at 18,30 hs with hundreds in front of us. Then the climb to the fifth floor. Swan Lake is the most famous of classical ballets. It was worth the time and effort to be there for an outstanding performance by the Teatro Colon Ballet and Filarmonica Orquesta de Buenos Aires. It was incredible. The only difference in the dress rehearsal performance and a paid performance is (1) the orchestra musicians dress casual, and (2) twenty rows of the main floor remain empty. It was an incredible evening of exquisite music and dance.

The newly inaugurated Centro Cultural Kirchner has announced a schedule for May and June.
