I used to buy a good pan dulce for Christmas but I think the prices are out of control. For a good one1 KILO $200pesos and even more.
Has anyone found a good one with abudant fruits and nuts at a reasonable price?

I haven't eaten pan dulce this year, just can't justify spending that much for fruit bread. So yes, I think the price is out of control.

1) It takes 2 days to prepare one, even more if you use sourdough (you have to prep the sourdough, it rises slower).
2) dried fruit and candied fruit are expensive. At least 30% of the cost is due to them!
3) you can try and make it at home - if you have enough patience. I have the mould but I haven't yet found the will to dedicate 2 days to it. RECIPE HERE
4) good stuff comes for a price, cheap stuff comes for Argentinians
5) Try here: In Bocca al Lupo - Palermo Hollywood - from the pics, they look like they are half a kilo and sell for ARS109

Or try here: Mauro.it, Belgrano ARS220 for 1 kg, but look at that filling! OMG!

I love panettone. I hate pan dulce. My mother in law always tells me "you like the cheap horrible one". Panettone is in a completely different league, if I need a doorstop I will buy the heavy dry horrible pan dulce

I am bulding a quincho out of pan dulce. 3 or 4 usually appear in our house each Christmas, I'm never quite sure how, but we would gratefully accept any further donations.

I love pan dulce, I like it even more when I can get it during the year and not just for Xmas. The more candied and dried fruits the better, but it has to be moist! I have a short list of my favorite places for pan dulce. I don't think I ever had the true Italian panettone so I cannot say anything about it tbh. Also, there are many good desserts you can prepare with it for Xmas, for example toast a slice and serve it with a scoop of ice cream on top. Yum! The only downside is that it has about 400 calories a slice, other than that I can eat half of it over coffee no problem.
