Restaurants new law: obligatory tip up to 18%

The US has a minimum wage set for most hourly workers. The one exception is that restaurant and other tipped workers have a special much lower hourly wage mandated by the state. This is why the high tipping rate is common to overcome the low wage of those workers. Does argentina also have a different minimum wage mandated for restaurant workers?

Isn't this the sort of thing imposed in 'socialist' countries?
Sergio, whether intentional or not, you made a crucial disctinction when you used the word "imposed" after I used the word "implemented." Your choice of that word was more appropriate than mine.

See page 15.
This sector currently has wages ranging from around 600k to 1.7m. Far above the national minimum wage of 234k.

With the proposed rates of 14%-18% which is much higher than the customary 10%, should it come to pass, I'd be interested to see the small print of the law to understand if the employees will receive 100% of it or if the union who is "advocating" this law will receive some kind of cut, commission or responsibility in distributing it...
Those percentages are an imitation of North American customs (customs, not laws) but Argentina does not pay North American wages. Europeans don't leave such high tips.

This sounds like a socialist idea to implement by force that the client pays the wages of restaurant and bar workers . This will be the final nail in the coffin for this industry already suffering from very low turnover due to very high prices. Imho if You run a high class restaurant pay your staff a decent wage and do not put the onus on the client . This new law is set to be approved in the coming week .
There is no plan for obligatory tipping, at least not at the moment.
