$$$ Stuck between a rock and an Argentine place...

How would one send a wire here and pickup in USD? The money's in a European bank account, in USD.

I've never used this site, but it was mentioned here by others a long time ago. Perhaps it is still a viable alternative to WU ? ... https://www.xoom.com/sendmoneynow/argentina

anyone using them? They claim pickups at banks and even xfer deposits to local USD accounts as well, but with the new law I have my doubts.

I used Xoom about 4 years ago, before I had permanent residency. When I went to Banco Francés to pick up the money that I sent myself from my US bank account, they said they couldn't give it to me because I didn't have a DNI. A passport would not suffice. I had to reverse the transfer and then make another one to my Argentine husband.

At the time, their rates were a lot cheaper than Western Union's. Not sure if that's the case anymore. If it is, I recommend Xoom - as long as you know a trustworthy DNI holder who can pick up the money for you.

Also, I was able to receive the money in US dollars. However, something tells me that that is no longer possible.

I've been trying to figure out how to pay an Argentine developer in USD, and we explored the Xoom option. They do not do USD any longer.

There is no practical way to get USD into the country electronically and disbursed as such.

Hey,

I had the same problems last couple of years....needed to pay cash dollars here in BA, but my account was outside Argentina.
I have used an intermediare, a private company that you send the money too. Then when its credited on their account, you can go and pick it up cash by them, here in BA!
Worked well for me the last 3 years.....no problems, no missing money!
(of course you pay a spread for the transaction, but its small)
Mail me if you want the details!

Last month they told me in Banco Piano, that WU only accepts transfers that qualify as "family help" now. 3 thousand dollars per month maximum, and only if last name of the recipient is the same as yours.

Does anyone know if this applies to receiving $ in Argentina, or just sending it from? I need to send a small amount of cash (>100 euro) from Germany to an Argentine citizen in BA, and am wondering whether Western Union -- rip-off though it is -- would even be an option anymore.

The only place i have heard where you can get US$ from overseas is a money transfer agency that colombian friends use to send US$ from home.
It is similar to western union, they will exchange the US$ at a rate of $4.70 (or at least thats what it was 2 weeks ago) or you can just take the US$. I dont know the name of the place, but it is close to corrientes 9 de julio as i have been there once with a friend about 6 months ago - maybe someone else knows the place ?
