Depends on what you mean by "understand." I know all the rules and much of the strategy. But I can only barely understand the lifetime of frustration it can cause. I have an English friend who gets annoyed when I say I am supporting Argentina, France, and Mexico. For him the WC is about England and only England .... and when they lose, it's the end of the world and also the beginning of the next cycle of frustration, always until you die. Whereas for me, I won't even think about it for 4 more years. That said, I think I probably have more fun watching the WC than he does (unless England wins, of course).
Edit: That doesn't mean I don't get frustrated when Argentina plays badly.
Understandably so, the Brits hasn't tasted WC victory since 1966 ? So they must be longing to get it this time around ! Unless, the Germans gets it and if that happens, heaven gives...I still remember one match- Britain vs Germany and when the G_ opposite won, there were "Matanza" all over the stadium....Sour losing....
