Summer And Power Outages, how Well Prepared Are We?

I decided it would be prudent to put together a personal preparedness plan. Living on the sixth floor of a building with high ceilings and no back up generator for the elevator means a very difficult climb, especially with groceries or water. Altho I live in a part of Recoleta that is quite tourist sensitive, it is not immune, and I lost power last summer. It's interesting to note things that you hadn't realized were power dependent...like toilet tank filling....So I'm stocking up on a couple of jugs of water, non perishable food items, and keep my electronics more charged than normal. I even had to paper train my dog as descending and ascending with her in my arms several times a day became a real problem. I also have a great LED luz de emergencia. But for sure what will be the worse is no AC and NO INTERNET. Also not being able to bring in fresh supplies , especially soda, because of the weight of having to carry it up so many flights (I live alone).
And then there was being trapped in the elevator when the power went out...couldn't get to my wine stash from there......

Coqueta, Very good comments to keep in mind...!! Also add Candles/matches and several pocket flashlights to walk around the dark hallways. No electricity means NO Water at all since building pumps don't function. (Tuna sandwiches by candlelight).

Its a Lottery

One of the options i use to reduce weight and space usage is stocking up on dry juice mixes(tang, clight etc) i know it might not be the best but works out pretty good as back up,also i have a stock of a couple of boxes of powder milk and i buy the individual mayo sachet for the tuna sandwiches so there's no need for refrigerator if the power goes out
Great idea on the candles and other emergency lighting systems !!and keep in mind you can never have enough water,i'd double up on the stock if i were on a building and some kind of secondary heat source to heat meals and water( maybe a 1 burner camping stove? with extra fuel)
Good idea keeping your electronics always charged!!!

5 years in BA ( excluding previous years as a tourist). Never experienced ( in my building)- these electricity powercuts or water cuts or gas cuts or winter heating cuts.

I wonder if I live in the same city!

Coming soon to a building near you.

Nothing is impossible. Anything can happen anytime.

But part of my work deals a lot with what we call "Risk assessment". So for this situation, seems "highly unlikely".

There are so many rancid things about December in BA, but the worst may be going up a major commercial street such as Cabildo and seeing scores of giant chain stores with their ACs at full blast and their doors wide open, while meanwhile there are homes without any power whatsoever. Sickening.

No, I just watch Baexpats.org to get all the relevant news.

You didn't see on the news all the people protesting in the street for days because they had no power? Besides being an inconvenience because we have to throw everything out of our refrigerator, it's a serious problem for elderly people whose blood pressure can go down without a working air conditioner and who can't walk up and down ten flights of stairs every day for a week.

I concur. I too come from a very poor country and have seen it all in my lifetime for many many years.
