And how come these terrorists are all driving better cars than we are?

It seems like the press focuses on the humanitarian aspects. Don't they notice that 95% of these immigrants are young men?

Trying to escape forced conscription, either by the Assad government or by the rebels. Very common phenomena during a civil war.

Brazil is issuing VISAs to any Syrian who can get to a consulate. But the conditions are made very clear from the get go: You are welcome to come, but expect no hand-outs from the government. Any assistance will have to come from volunteers, charitable organizations or NGOs. And yet they come. And we are glad to have them.

I fear that this is one of those moments where kind hearts and good intentions will be our undoing.
It just seems like we should have some skepticism based on recent history.
But, I lived across the street from the World Trade Center on 9/11 so I have a different perspective.
I hope I am wrong.

@ARbound

When Hungary closed the borders, came vawe of refugees to Slovenia. First day came around 1300 people. First they couldn't wait to be registered, most just refused that. When police made some order, bunch of media was reporting about repression against poor people. And all police was doing was respecting the laws.

At the end they all came in, registered. Out of the number around 500 were Syrians, the rest Pakistani, Iraqi and other nationalities. Only 3 of them requested asylum in Slovenia (schengen regulation demands you have to request asylum in first eu country).

So, what is this generalisation you are speaking about? What will happen to Sweden, when they'll get refugees amounting to 20% of their population? It's easy to be smart from Americas, where governments nicely choose, who will migrate...

I understand how the asylum processing in the Schengen zone works, but it's all in theory, the reality is that people desire to be around others they are similar to. Why does this forum exist? Expats/migrants/immigrants/refugees/average joe likes to be around people that have similar traits to their own. If you had to move to say China, (assuming you're not Chinese) you'd be more likely to move to Shanghai or Beijing because the odds are better you can meet/associate with people from your culture there, practice your faith (if applicable) with less restrictions, and ultimately aren't going to be surrounded by as many people who are either afraid or hate you for no reason other than your religion or culture.

To put it even more simply, if you had to choose, where would you go, Germany or Slovenia? One country has a large population of people from your country/culture, the other has maybe 1 mosque for the whole country, and as many arabic speakers.

I'm not defending the actions of opportunists, simply trying to provide some insight in to why they've done what they did, and of course beggars can't be choosers, but Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia didn't want the refugees anyways, so its sort of a moot point about EU regulations.

As for the numbers, we won't know the total until the end of the year when stats for EU nations are prepared, in the end it will be more than 3 for Slovenia.

Does it matter if the people are fleeing Syria or Iraq or Afghanistan or Pakistan or Eritrea? These are the countries 90% or so are coming from, I challenge
anyone on this board to honestly say they'd stay in one of these countries without the resources they have now and try to live a peaceful life/raise a family,
my guess is no one would.

Again, doesn't mean I'm advocating throwing open the flood gates, just contextualizing why there is people from these countries too.

As for the generalization I'm criticizing, its this notion amongst particularly right wing, older, and christian people that Syrian refugees are not fleeing a war torn
failed state but instead looking for a way to manipulate western countries in to Sharia governed states. Of all the things people have on their mind, I doubt
the concept of an Emirate of Bavaria is among them...

Also, your implication that it easy to say these things because I'm not in Europe is also moot too. If you're in Argentina what does it matter to you? People have
opinions regardless, and I advocate that Canada should take in tens of thousands of people, especially since we seem to have the money to bomb Syria, but we've
taken in under 1,000 people (not families) and it is disgraceful.

Also, I live in a country where 20.6% of our population wasn't born here, and 51% of the people that live in Toronto were born abroad. Guess what?
Nothing has happened. We don't have sharia law, we don't have a fallen sky, Hell, we've had less terrorist attacks here than in Buenos Aires. Currently the immigrant
population of the United States and Sweden are statistically identical (13% for USA, 15% for Sweden) as this only accounts for legal US immigrants, so, it like Canada,
could be even more than Sweden, and there are no caliphates of Kentucky.

Also, the United States in particular has taken in Millions of poor, religious, ethnically diverse people since 1776, and it still stands.

How many are terrorists pretending to be refugees?

The same percentage, perhaps slightly more than those who were pretending to be tourists or legal immigrants during the past 100 years of
European History? People ask this question like terrorists trying to enter the EU is something new just because there are more migrants than before.

Was there hundreds of thousands of migrants trying to enter the EU during the Madrid/London attacks?

thats my biggest worry.

and what are Pakistanis doing there?

Economic migration, and if your biggest concern is that there could be terrorists (which there likely is) trying to enter the EU
then I assume you don't fly, because there could be terrorists (which there likely is) trying to down planes.

Also, if it really is your biggest concern, and not the plight of millions of people, including children, who have been murdered,
made homeless/nationless, tortured, maimed, left with PTSD and scars emotional and physical then I am sorry for whatever
caused you to lose your sympathy and concern for your fellow man.

It seems like the press focuses on the humanitarian aspects. Don't they notice that 95% of these immigrants are young men?

It's almost like taking women and children across dangerous oceans, deserts, war zones, mountains, etc. might result in there
being more men inclined to do it so they can a) keep their loved ones alive in say Jordan or Turkey while they find work and remit money
back to their family as support. But what do I know...

I was on a plane (United) flying from Atlanta to Denver when 9/11 happened. We had to land in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while escorted by a fighter jet.
That in absolutely nothing changes my perspective. I've been to Syria. I've visited Aleppo, Damascus, Homs and Palmyra. Syrians in general are very nice, friendly and warm people.
I am very happy to have them and hope many more will chose to come to Brazil.
I don't agree with Dilma on anything. But I agree with her on this.

Dilma Rousseff: Brazil ready to accept refugees with open arms

May they come. Stay. And make Brazil their country.

All the skepticism and suspicion invested in to the CIA, NSA, MI5, etc. wasn't enough to
stop 9/11, or the Boston Bombing, or the Anthrax mail, or... you know what, now that I think about it,
we weren't able to stop the AMIA bombing, or the Lockerbie bombing or My Lai, the Holocaust, the
Armenian genocide, etc. There's always going to be something terrible happen.

I'm in my 20s, my father, when we used to speak would complain about how the world is going to Hell
in a hand basket. I asked him what his father said in the 60s/70s... the same thing.

Maybe it's because I don't want to live in constant fear, maybe it's because I've been lucky enough to
see a portion of the world at my age, maybe it's because most of my friends are not Canadian/American,
but most people, world over, aren't looking for a way to hurt you. They're looking to love, be loved, give
their children a chance at a better life, and meek out some form of meaningful existence before they return
to the dirt again.

I know it's a meme at this point, but if we let the paranoia and fear consume us, we don't need to prepare for
the next attack, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, etc. will have already won by changing the way we deal with life and the world.

If you go to Salt Lake City, or Xi'an or Tehran or Dublin or Quito, stand in front of a grocery store long enough
rubbing your stomach with a pained look on your face and not say a word in the local language, someone will
soon enough bring you something to eat. This is my worldview. You can call me naive or young, but I am still
believing it after having visited AMIA/ESMA/Dachau/graves in Arlington.

It is easy to be cynical, jaded and paranoid, it is difficult to be loving, empathetic and compassionate, especially
when the body of a toddler washes ashore a turkish beach, the same body that was listed as a person on a
visa application your government rejected.

And how come these terrorists are all driving better cars than we are?

How inconsiderate of you! Terrorists have feelings too! They too wish to be comfortable while carrying out their daily duties like decapitating those they don't like! Don't generalize! You don't know their story! They may have PTSD, or something...

If we could all just love each other man, close your eyes and just inhale and exhale, inhale and sloooooowly exhale and imagine all those decapitations disappearing as you go to your happy place.

So if the charities and NGO's don't feed and house these immigrants how long before they turn to crime or join a terrorist group?
