Typical Street Scene - Photo I Took Today

Random observation- The title ¨So Many Choices¨ is misleading. I see maybe three different girls. Coming from a large city that boasts such events as Adultcon, I think an American (if you are one) would see all of those options as really only one type of choice. Just saying... Strange that you perceive these as many choices. But then maybe you aren´t from a town with Adultcon and other advertisements of this nature in every shape and color.

All kidding aside, this is pretty tame to some things I see stateside at least in CA. The daily news here on the other hand seems to be quite different.

Er... I have not left Disney World. I was born and raised in Arg. I lived abroad for 12 years and I came back to find that everyone and everything has become "vulgarized" - and people think that means being "progre".

Imagine going back to the US, turning the TV on and finding out that everyone speaks like Snoop Dogg...

I fully agree with your comments and believe that the vulgarity prevalent in society today is demeaning to the human spirit and creates the social problems prevalent in western societies addicted to porn.

I believe that there is a much bigger picture behind this to demean human beings and if you look at the images force fed to us today like Lady Gaga and co it is blatantly obvious that they wish to break up society and create robotic people incapable of human feeling and ready for animalistic sex at a drop of a hat.

I find it sad that Argentina worships the body and the face and the obsession of the culo and forces older people to have a ridiculuos amount of facelifts and other surgeries but ignores the spiritual . There is tremendous dignity in growing old lines and all with your memory intact and your face an expression of you and your life.

Everybody expects this from Las Vegas, that's what the place is all about. Not exactly typical US. I don't see how anyone can think that the porn magazines and handouts are exactly a good influence for kids. I know, I know....some people are going to say how much worse it is in the US....

Would it be any more palatable if I had said, "Disneyland, Anaheim"? Sorry to burst the bubble, same stuff you see in BA is posted around Disneyland: pole dancing 101. It is naive to believe this stuff is exclusive to Buenos Aires and going to go away. Hell, I got in a taxi at LAX and they had placards advertising skin: massages, escorts. That's life, deal with it.

Perry & Nativexpat I am not sure I agree with you all the way here. I don´t know if things are more vulgar now. Each time period has a context. Although I do agree sometimes it seems society is going overboard, we have always been fascinated by the physical. Let´s not forget that prostitution is a very old profession. The marketing of those in this profession is about as old as the profession itself. I don´t know why it is surprising to see that this profession too has evolved.

I think what is most important is to have a healthy body image despite what you see around you because it will always be there. I think having open discussions about things like this and having a laugh or two take away the power of these things. Contrary to dehumanizing, discussion puts a human face on the issue.

I think it is the people that get all up-in-arms over photos like these that scare me the most. These people usually have the most secrets to hide and are the most uncomfortable with themselves. You don´t have to like a lot of what goes on in society today but, you will encounter it.

Oh boy......

who exactly are "they"?

I think for me the issue is that you only see pics of women, not of men. So right or wrong, kids from a young age are being exposed to the concept of women as commodities. And yes, I believe that does affect kids and perpetuate sexism. It has nothing to do with being a prude for me nor do I believe that seeing a naked body is shocking. But if kids see are only women half-naked and as soon as they are old enough to read, realize they're advertising their services, how does it not colour perception of women? Now if men and women were equally represented - that issue goes away.

The issue for me is not 1 photo here and there... but it seems too much of the same everywhere: Tinelli's shows and TV in general, women's butt cheeks/boobs "come hitter style" fully displayed at magazine stands (just hang them a bit higher!), those little stickers on lamp posts and trash cans,"perreo-perreo mamita como mueves tu culo frotalo frotalo perreo perreo huh huh songs", transvestites on my bus route every night ... seems like my only option is to turn the TV off, but I don't have a choice to avoid all the rest...

I am not a prude at all and believe that sex is wonderful and uplifting for many people .

Too many people are confusing issues here when clearly the issue is about the dignity of people and the sancity of the human body . This has nothing to do with religious reasons but with personal beliefs. I am also anti abortion and completely condemn Argentinas high abortion rate.

I do not believe though that prostitution and the selling of prostitution is something wonderful and aspires to creates a healthy society .In most cases the woman are victims caught up in a vicious circle of drug abuse and false promises
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7793183.stm

Prostitution is a huge problem in Argentina and many workers in Buenos Aires are effectively sex slaves . They are addicted to drugs given to them by their employers to encourage risky and unhibited behaviours. This is not healthy for them nor it is healthy to those who are addicted to prostitution

It seems people in this thread are more concerned with the "vulgar butt" than the real problem here, human trafikking! That is what I will have to explain to my son, not the fact that some women choose to show more skin or do some kind of dance move. That is something really terrible, heartwrenching, did you see how much these women are offered at?
Every time I see these little cartelitos I take them off and throw them in the trash, I have even stopped man gluing them on the streets and ask them if they know how these girls are being treated. It really makes me a bit sick that the worry from some posters seems to be "it is so distasteful" WTF??? Would you say the same if it was Claudia Shiffer or Valeria Mazza? It is the fact that the women on display is not your type???
And re:transvestites, in general, they prefer to be refered to as "she", so telling kids that they are men with fake boobs is very disrespectful to them. Because they are so marginalized they have not a lot of options when it comes to make a living.
And about Tinelli and co., just get rid of the TV, I don't like that type of show, therefore, I don't watch it. It still makes me worry the fact that lots and lots of people are watching it and thinking that objectivizing women is a normal thing to do.
the fact that 90 % of the time is women who are displayed as commodities is because most consumers of paid sex are males...something to do with power and patriarchy, but Im not gonna go there here.
