Why Still No Buenos Aires-Colonia Bridge?

Most of the Bay Bridge was fabricated in China, shipped, then assembled. The original cost estimate for the Bay Bridge was around 1 billion.

Wow then the bridge had a few dollars cost over-run to the tune of US$6.8 Billion? The Chinos made out big time !

What if Montevideo just admits that it is redundant next to Buenos Aires and closes up shop? The ATM problem could be resolved with a network of submarine pneumatic tubes. If we could just decrapify the beaches here Uruguay would cease to exist.

The big dig in Boston tripled in price and took twice as long. ( I will not look up the figures! )

The new tunnel under Seattle , where my son is an engineer , is already a year behind , will take a lot longer and cost probably double.

Most infrastructure projects take longer and have cost overruns .

Bridges to no where ?

This one would take the cake as a useless , senseless , corruption magnet as any I have ever heard.

Is there not more pressing needs right here in Buenos Aires ? Argentina ?

I would be happy if they fixed the weather radars at EZE , as would the Air Europa flight a few weeks ago.

Also, I'm wondering: If Uruguay were an Argentine province for real (i.e. in an official sense), what impact would that have had on the planning or construction of the bridge? Would it have made construction of such a bridge somewhat more possible, or proposed somewhat earlier than in real life, or both? Or would there have been no more cooperation between the provinces of Buenos Aires and Uruguay than between the real-life countries of Argentina and Uruguay?

Federal prerogatives prohibited Santa Fe and Entre Ríos provinces from bridging the river between the two, so they built a tunnel beneath it: http://www.tunelsubfluvial.gov.ar/

But I thought that the more recent Rosario-Victoria bridge is also between Santa Fe and Entre Rios provinces.

It is, but I don't know the history of that one. I expected it needed federal approval as well. The tunnel runs from Paraná (Entre Ríos) to Santa Fe (provincial capital), but only covers a small segment of that distance.

Oh, and even if the BA-Colonia bridge were completed, would it still be more expensive for an ordinary motorist going from Buenos Aires to Montevideo (or vice versa) to go on that bridge than it is to go on the ferries such as the Buquebus? Because I read recently that the one-way toll for the new bridge would be something like $60 US, and I believe that the bridge was conceived more with freight traffic in mind.

The toll on the Oresund bridge from Denmark to Sweden is $25 for a small car. I crossed it with a station wagon and my 22 ft Trailered Star Class Sailboat and the toll was US$70.00. It also has trains that travel on the lower level . There is a US$7 surcharge on passenger train fares that cross the bridge.

If freight is of such major concern , the entire Rail infrastructure in Argentina needs billions of investment. Especially getting grain to Rosario and containers out of downtown Buenos Aires.
