I think it's possible to get some paid apps directly from the developers' websites - pay your money and download the .apk and install that way instead of via the market I believe? Certainly no replacement for the convenience of the market, but I guess some paid apps are better than none.

I didn't even need a biometric one to enter the US; my ordinary passport was enough to enter under the waiver. Is that a new requirement maybe?

I dunno, the OP did specifically mention wanting a legal copy :) azmike9: If you have the license key for the copy you're already running a simple reinstall should take care of the language problem. All that leaves you with is acquiring the installation DVD itself. It's easily downloadable...
