"10. Smoking is good for you.
Almost all of Rand’s heroes smoke, and not just for pleasure. It’s no coincidence that Atlas Shrugged expresses these views. Ayn Rand herself was a heavy smoker, and she often asserted that she was the most rational person alive; therefore, she believed, her preferences were the correct preferences which everyone else should emulate. Beginning from this premise, she worked backward to explain why everything she did was an inevitable consequence of her philosophy. As part of this, she decided that she smoked tobacco not because she’d become addicted to it, but because it’s right for rational people to smoke while they think.

In case you were wondering, Rand did indeed contract lung cancer later in life, and had an operation to remove one lung. But even though she eventually came to accept the danger of smoking, she never communicated this to her followers or recanted her earlier support of it. As in other things, her attitude was that people deserve whatever they get."

Of course, Medicare paid for that operation. Ayn was nothing if not a hypocrite.

She was. However you must face it, if there were a hypocrite college, you'd be the headmaster.

If by new deal you mean Obamacare, read my post 2 pages ago. If by new deal you mean passing all of Obama's whims then you don't know what democracy is. Either way both partied are screwed up and I (we) won't revisit the absurdity of your peronist-republican comparison.

You misspelled "knee-jerk opposition to anything Obama even suggests, including proposals based on Republican 'think'-tanks like the Heritage Foundation."

You have yet to quote and personally attempt to refute anything written by Ayn Rand. Adam Lee is a hack (no pun intended when talking about smoking) who makes ten sweeping assertions about Ayn Rands philosophy and "message" of Atlas Shrugged using less than twelve quotes pulled from a novel of over twelve hundred pages.

According to Barbara Branden's biography, Ayn Rand quit smoking when she realized it was hazardous to her health and so did I, in 1982 (the same year Ayn Rand died).

Tens of millions of people (in the US alone) still smoke, and until fairly recently (if we can believe him), that included the current President of the United States.

If she had not been forced by law to pay Medicare taxes I would agree with you that Ayn rand was a hypocrite to seek medical care under the provisions of the law. . Same goes for Social Security. She made this clear in her writings. She paid taxes that supported many programs with which she did not agree.

I don't think she was ever accused of tax evasion.

Please see my previous post regarding Rand's alleged hypocrisy.

I'm sure she also walked on "public" sidewalks in NYC and the plumbing in her apartment was connected to the New York City sewer system.

It is possible for an Ayn Rand "fan" (at least this one) to be opposed to Federal programs like Obamacare and also support "public projects" on a state and local level, including roads and bridges...and state and local police who pursue all types of criminals, including the murderers of innocent tourists.

Lee shows more insight in a few paragraphs than Ayn did in thousands of pages of bloviating agit-prop "prose."
