i wrote to Heinz Argentina to ask them to import baked beans and that it would be good business for them. I had a reply saying they were considering it, but that was about ten years ago

Have a look on the web for some recipes, its not too hard to make them. Just soak the beans for at least 48hours prior to cooking. I bought some small tupperwear pots so I could freeze portions of them. I even added some chopped up frankfurters and worcestershire sauce for a bit of variation.

You can try this Cuban recipe Moors and Christians ! The Moors are the black.beans. Dates to the Arab control of the Iberian Peninsula or half of it

Excuse my ignorance, but is porridge like oatmeal? Cream of wheat? Grits? Never had it and always wondered.....

When going to decent chinese restaurant, ask if they can make you a hot pot rice porridge, it is delicious and the ancient chinese tells you, it can bring up a stiff. Sort of "Sopa levanta muerto" !

if you want homemade baked beans get some Porotos beans from the supermarket (dried or tinned) and I used this recipe, didnt bother with the treacle or cider but added worcestershire sauce. Tasted really good.

I similarly enjoy wasting my time emailing companies asking them why X isn't available here. I rarely get a reply, although one Uruguayan company had fun explaining it was the fault of Cristina that their product was no longer available in Argentina due to import problems. :lol:

I appreciate that people tend to miss foods from home when they have been away a while but I am generally puzzled by people that travel and then don't try local things.
Pretty much every country I have visited the 'tourist' areas are wall to wall KFC/McD/etc .

I have an Argentino friend who has traveled to London, Rome, Paris...several other places. If I'm not around to suggest restaurants, he's content with the local McDonald's.

I'm sure several of you know someone just like that.
