Get your pots out for the lads!

3) The rich lady is so benevolent that she is sending her maid on a vacation overseas. To Paris, actually. And the rich lady provided the maid with all the financial help she would need from hotels and airfare to cash. It just so happens that the cash the rich lady has is in Pesos. No one in the world gives a rat's @$$ about Pesos. The maid needs Euros and so she's out there protesting against this crap and the rich lady is there to support her.

When I first came to Buenos Aires, I was the rich lady, now I live like the maid !

I think that most on this board agree that it's about so much more than currency controls. BUT... for most Argentines, it is as simple as currency controls.

If a majority think that a small minority of spoiled rich people are whining, that's all that matters. This isn't 1955. The military isn't going to bomb the Plaza de Mayo. The CIA isn't going to encourage (assist?) a military coup. This is majority rule. That's the thing about a democracy, everyone's vote counts.

To think that EVERYONE sees that it's about more than wanting to buy dollars to travel is to totally miss the way a majority of the population live on a daily basis. If you have a computer and have time to post on this site (and are fluent in English), then you already are far removed from the average citizen.

While I agree with almost everything you say here, I'm not sure what it has to do with my post. I didn't say anything about what the majority thinks, or 1955, or the CIA. If you've somehow gleaned that I would be in favor of any anti-democratic shenanigans, then let me take this opportunity to stand on the table in my flipflops and declare that I am NOT in favor of anything of the sort!

Just saw your post, researched it, and indeed, Pagina12 says its from a 2008 regarding the famous 'retenciones.' Thus, the use of the word "allegedly" in my OP. The point about the photo making an interesting statement, however, still stands. I think there are two ways that you can see the picture, which is often influenced by one's political perspective.

You're right, the point still stands. Whether it was taken in 2008 or last night doesn't matter. Of course we can't really know whether the mucama is there of her own free will. Could be, but I doubt it. Maybe the lady on the right is raging Trotskyist. But I doubt it. This picture nails pretty well a certain segment of the cacerolazo crowd. Sure, they're out there. What I object to is the way a picture like this is used (by some) to discredit what is, in my opinion, a legitimate gripe. This is what this government has been doing for years. If you are not with us then you must be just like the kind of person who would order her maid to go out and bang pots and pans in her uniform. Just more ad hominem spin.

The problem as I see it for the protesters is that they don't have a champion on the political scene. A "face" that represents them. Macri ? I don't think so. He's an embattled technocrat who just doesn't inspire a lot of passion. Carrio ? Yesterday's news and probably asleep in a tanning salon. Who else ? Cobos ? Way off the radar.

A whole lot of pot bangin' probably won't amount to much until these folks get a magnetic leader.

I'm sure someone (probably another peronist) will hijack the movement and we'll roll along for another 10-15 years.

How about Marx? Oh, wait ... he's dead. Castro? Dag! Dead, too! Uh... there's Chevez. Well ... almost dead. Who the heck is left?

Hey! Let's put a call into Kim Jong! Yes!

For most argentines its more than just currency controls. That is just one of the many nails in the coffin that the KKs are building for themselves. If only a decent opposition will stand up and bury this twisted regime once and for all.
