I Went To See A Band...

I dont know about dedicated blues venues, but there are certainly blues bands. Its not, ya know, indigenous- so they all are a bit forced.
The granddaddy of blues in Argentina was Pappos Blues, founded by Norberto Napolitano in 1970. He died in 2005, so you have to be pretty old to remember him in his prime- I have several porteno friends in their 60's who are fans.
Sometimes there are blues at Thelonius.

There still is, I think, https://es-es.facebook.com/LaMississippi

I'm not sure whether https://es-es.facebook.com/MemphisLaBluseraOficial still exists.

I went to the Evgeny Kissin concert the other day. Very very good. Has anyone been to the Sinatra cover show on Fridays at notorious?

I saw a great blues band at the library some time last year. Don't remember the name but it was a good show. I'd love to hear some reccs.

The Backstreet Boys are coming to Buenos Aires. I know all the BAXPats will be there. :)

According to Wikipedia Memphis La Blusera split in 2008.

yes, they quitted playing several years ago, and in 2013 or 2014, cant remember, the singer died in a car accident going from Rosario to Cordoba :(

Jueves I went to Niceto, to see Axel Krygier premiere his new album, Hombre de Piedra.
Everything I wrote about Axel in 2013 is still true.
He is still entertaining, energetic, and unique, bouncing around like an animated character.
His band still rocked in about ten different genres.
He had Alejandro Teran again, along with Christian Teran, who I think is Alejandro's son, on horns.
Teran as a backup player is kind of like having Eno backing you up- Teran has played on, produced, and created hundreds of albums with virtually everybody in Argentina, including Charly Garcia, and he and Axel are the living links to Soda Stereo- they both played with SS at El Ultimo Concierto, the fabled live concert
at the Rio Plate stadium in 1997.

At one point, Maria Ezqiuaga, lead singer of Rosal, came out and sang a duet with Axel.

Then, another legendary figure in Argentine Rock, Daniel Melingo, came out. He first got known in the early 80s with Los Twist, a rockabilly band. Then he played with Los Abuelos de Nada, and with Charly Garcia. Later he reinvented himself as a post modern tango crooner. But this night, he was, in the words of the review of this show in La Nacion, the godfather of bums- unshaven, wearing dark glasses and an army jacket, he came out, played a free jazz solo on a quena bamboo flute, then sang in a gravelly growl that was somewhere between Captain Beefheart and Melvin Van Peebles. Obviously, he was having a great time.

There were a couple of youngsters onstage, but, the average age was over 50, most of the time, and yet these guys really rocked, and, between them, could play anything, and HAVE- they have played everything, with everybody.

plus, the album is really good, too.
Here is Melingo, that night- and the incredible Juan Ravioli on guitar, wearing the biggest hat ever.

Saturday night, Pimenton played Matienzo.
I went to see them in February, and was blown away.
My wife was not in town then, so we both went this time.
As usual, nothing much happened before 2 am, when the first band, Bife, went on- its Ivanna, the lead singer from Pimenton, doing Queer Tango, Cumbia, and Folk- she, dressed as a gaucho, with shaven head and eyeliner moustache painted on, while her bandmate, born male, is wearing a mini-skirt, knee high kitty stockings, and a tank top, also bald. You had to be there. El Remolon came on to help them do a cover of one of his songs.

Pimenton itself didnt hit the stage til 3:30 am. And, the fully packed house danced their asses off for an hour or so.
Only in Buenos Aires.
Finally got home about five.
With, as usual, single women still casually strolling the streets of my neighborhood, walking dogs, and window shopping- NOT hookers, just ordinary people who think every city in the world is safe at 5 am...
