Prepaga Health Insurance

PAMI is a warehouse for the elderly. She is much better off going to Hospital Santa Lucia that specializes in eye conditions. It was a mistake dropping OSDE. Get her Hospital Italiano, cheaper and excellent doctors. PAMI kills.

If you decide to take her to Hospital Santa Lucia, go very early in the morning to get a number. They attend patients in the order they arrive (some are there in line as early as 5am). The address is San Juan 2021 in San Cristobal.

You can check online with her PAMI benefit number and find the opthamalogist she selected when she signed up. It is listed on her PAMI carnet. There is a very short list of eye doctors with PAMI. I have taken someone recently to CENTRO DE OJOS SAN PABLO, AV. SAN JUAN 2483 where they attend seniors with PAMI. If she doesn't have this one, you can easily make a change by visiting the corresponding Agencia office. www.pami.org.ar You can take her there without an appointment for a quick diagnosis and then make an appointment with a specialist in the area she requires. Their appointment phone is 4941 7953 for PAMI appts; hours to call 10-1pm only. Bring her DNI and carnet to the appt. She may have to wait two months for an appointment, but this is an excellent center. My opthamologist from OSDE is one of the head doctors at this center.

Pami means free healthcare. It is up to you to find out who are good doctors and/or clinics.

If you are not proactive, you are dead, there i agree with you.

I heard the best way to have sure access to Trinidad is take Galeno.

Anyone on Galeno? How much are you paying?

PAMI is not free! we all pay for it with our taxes. Given the outrageous taxes we are all paying the service is horrid. Nothing is free, public hospitals are not free, public schools are not free, it is all paid for with out taxes, we are being robbed if you think of what we pay and what they are giving us in return.

Another very good hospital that specializes in eye care is Instituto Lagleyze. She should just go to the emergency. Hospital Italiano, even though centralized, takes affiliates up to 75 yo. See if you can get your MIL to enroll.

Nikad, my grand Ma ate a chicken bone and it made a hole in her intestines. She was 1 day sat on a chair at the garden until we discover her. The Pami ambulante carried to her to clínica Los Robles at Tapiales, close to Central Market, not fancy at all.
The. Dr. Told US that they didn t know what was going on, but she has over 2 litres of white blood and they hava to operate to find it out. They also said that the chances to sur vive were low.
It took about 8 hours but they found the bone. they clean the infection and she was about 3 months ar the hospital. But they sent her home because they needed the bed.
They provided the Special bed and 24/7 nurse for her plus the kinesiologist comming twice a week to her home for 2 months. Also they lend Her the wheel chair.

Was it enough? No. But it was a lot.
They cancel the help because she owns a 200 m2 House and she has a jubilación plus the pention about 5000 pesos.

Can she pay for prívate health insurance? No.

So, it was fair enough for me.

At San Luis she continúed with Pami.

They operated her again (she lost 50 kilos in between) and now she is working on walking again.

She did't pay one peso but, my grand pa paid his taxes for over 40 years while he was working.

It is relieving that sometimes it works fine as too many people that cannot afford anything else have PAMI. My ex MIL´s mother had horrible stomach pains, was admitted into a clinic, and told she needed emergency surgery. After surgery her daughter was told she has liver cancer. Months later we discovered it was just gall bladder rocks. So she needed a second surgery.
My great uncle needed a hip bone replacement. Other than that he was super healthy. Was admitted to a clinic in the city, and after surgery for some reason he needed oxygen. There was only ONE tube for a whole floor with over 60 inpatients. He caught pneumonia and died 10 days after. These are my first hand experiences. I have many more from friends, etc. In my opinion, it is best to go to a public hospital and not the clinics of death. Where they even plain REFUSE to give you your medical history files - which you know is illegal.

My grandmother has PAMI and IOMA (Buenos Aires province one). The latter has very good places in Capital (Sanatorio Guemes is where we usually take her), and the former gets you 100% on most meds.
You're right Nikad that taxes are high here, but 1) not everyone pays them and 2) Better than nothing, as re:US. e.g. Had to run to a hospital in a vacation and got a U$1800 bill for my GF just to have urine+blood test and a doc to see her in emergency room. We had travel insurance but after 2 years, they are still fighting about half of the check.
Granted, needs to be better, as actually there's a lot of money put into PAMI and the public health system but lot of it just vanishes before reaching the patient. Still a lot less worse than many so called 1st world countries.
As bajo_cero said, if you are proactive finding the gems in the public system, it can be as good as a prepaga.

I'm considering dropping Hospital Italiano 'cause it's always so full with patients, long waiting lists and the quality of medics is not as good as expected. I'm doubting between Swiss Medical, but they have so many plans, I can't make a choice. Or is OSDE better? it cost a bit more.
I'm 49, more or less healthy. Suggestions?
