Anyone Going To The World Cup?

This Japanese couple did not listen to me and went there anyways. These events happened at a protest before a football match.

I nonchalantly asked my Brazilian wife if we should go check out the World Cup.

"Are you f-ing crazy?" was her reply.

I can see her point. Two items in the news today.

First, the Brazilian military will be protecting the WC teams, because the cops may decide to go on strike.

Second, Brazilian law enforcement will be implementing a number of "preventive detentions" of people thought likely to cause trouble.

Unlikely, since this would be completely unconstitutional.

Today's (Friday's) La Nacion, page 2, the headline reads -
Con arrestos preventivos, buscan evitar protestas durante la Copa

I don't make these things up.

Poorly written headline and article. Those are not "preventive" arrests, as Brazilian law does not allow for such thing. The police will get warrants for phone tapping in hopes to arrest people in the act of committing the actual crime of conspiracy. Conspiracy is a crime and you can be arrested for it. But the Brazilian penal code does not allow for you to be arrested because you might commit a crime.

I know 3 people who live in Brazil, two in Sao Paulo and one in Ipanema. The two in Sao Paulo have told me things are getting worse by the day, it's like a military zone everywhere and people are battling the police with their bare hands, rocks, bottles what ever they can find because they are so angry about what the government has spent on this over hyped sporting event while so so so many people continue to be impoverished. My friend in Ipanema is less affected but says crime has gotten worse in the last year or so and that there is no prevention, every now and then there are police / military raids in poor areas, they do sweeps and people are beaten shot and hauled away.

Yep, sounds like our left-wing, socialist, former guerrilla president alright. [/background]

And Lula is awesome!

Argentine, TN reporters live from Rio reported that it took them 2.5 hours to travel in Rio from Barra de Tijuca to Copacabana. They recommended to use bicycles or good walking shoes, traffic is a mess even now before the World Cup jams.
