Anyone Going To The World Cup?

That is my home town. Comparing all the cities hosting world cup matches, Brasilia should be by far the least dangerous and chaotic. It should also be the most expensive and most boring. Other than watching the games and staring at modern architecture, there is not much to do there. Just lots and lots of over paid and under worked government employees who think they are part of some aristocracy. Good luck there.

Haha that's exactly what my Canadian friend and I said, it's like yay, going to a match in Canberra or Ottawa. On the other hand his wife will be happier that he's headed to Brasilia and not Rio!

A friend of mine in Canada was in the draw to get tix, he didnt get any but just got an offer for resale tix to the quarter-finals (match 60), so he and my husband might be going, it's in Brasilia -- they will have to decide tonight/tomorrow -- for a reasonable priced air ticket BA - Brasilia he's looking at about 28hrs of travel. He's teaching a course in Mendoza until the 3rd so can't leave before then, so it sounds like he will end up spending a couple of thousand USDs for a 1-2 night stay in Brasilia. The friend from Vancouver will go Thurs-Sun, which is also insane.. I'd prefer he come home to Vancouver with me for a visit, but hey, whatever, it's possibly the last World Cup they'll have the chance to go to while they're still somewhat young...

With luck, it'll be the last World Cup, full stop.

This picture sums up pretty well how most Brazilians feel about this World Cup.

For my own selfish reasons I`d rather my husband not go -- I told him this morning, well, it's going to be at least a couple thousand dollars, 25+ hrs of travel each way, all for a 36hr or so stay in Brasilia and a match that potentially could end up not even containing Argentina (it`s quarter-finals, the groups are pretty easy for Argentina, but hey, you never know). And I said, that would be his holiday for the year, since I`ve got to go home si o si to Canada by July and will stay for a month so won't be taking any more time off this year.

Your husband should be safe in Brasilia. He will just be bored out of his mind and they will milk him for every penny he has.

I'm not worried about his safety, we've been to Brasil, he has especially, and still speaks a bit of portuguese (it's rusty). It just sounds like a bit of a headache and a lot of money. Grrrr grump grump. Did I mention it's my birthday today, I'm officially OLD apparently from my attitudes! 15 years or so ago I would have bought the ticket, taken a bus up there and just said "don't worry, we'll sort it out when we get there". Now I'm all arrrr traffic arrr hotel expense arrr better things to do (apparently I"m not only old and grumpy, but also a pirate!)
