Anyone Going To The World Cup?

I was in Rio de Janeiro about a month ago. I went to a dance club in Ipanema, and the people were dancing to Madonna and chanting "Não vai ter copa" inside... Bizarre.

Mais uma capirinha, por favor?

Caipirinhas > soccer

It's just as well the World Cup doesn't operate like Eurovision, where the winner is obliged to host the next tournament, otherwise Brazil would be bankrupt.

I am going to Sao Paulo on Tuesday, just for a few days to visit friends. It was the time that worked best for us but now it does seem like maybe not the best choice with all the unrest taking place... Oh well!

Thanks for the responses…from the feedback here, it seems like pretty much no baexpat members are going either. I wonder if all the games are true sell outs? Who can afford those ticket prices, plus travel expenses to Brazil and to those games in the boonies? I've heard horror stories about hotel room prices. It does feel like we are on the verge of disaster here. And I wondered the same thing as another member: if the World Cup is total chaos, could it affect Brazil hosting the Olympics? I can't imagine they could possibly make a change this late in the game.
Some say the refs better fix the matches to make sure Brazil passes to the final or there will be near revolution:

Argentine, TN reporters live from Rio reported that it took them 2.5 hours to travel in Rio from Barra de Tijuca to Copacabana. They recommended to use bicycles or good walking shoes, traffic is a mess even now before the World Cup jams.

2.5hrs is what it took us in March 2013 -- during world cup it will be awful!

A friend of mine in Canada was in the draw to get tix, he didnt get any but just got an offer for resale tix to the quarter-finals (match 60), so he and my husband might be going, it's in Brasilia -- they will have to decide tonight/tomorrow -- for a reasonable priced air ticket BA - Brasilia he's looking at about 28hrs of travel. He's teaching a course in Mendoza until the 3rd so can't leave before then, so it sounds like he will end up spending a couple of thousand USDs for a 1-2 night stay in Brasilia. The friend from Vancouver will go Thurs-Sun, which is also insane.. I'd prefer he come home to Vancouver with me for a visit, but hey, whatever, it's possibly the last World Cup they'll have the chance to go to while they're still somewhat young...

That is my home town. Comparing all the cities hosting world cup matches, Brasilia should be by far the least dangerous and chaotic. It should also be the most expensive and most boring. Other than watching the games and staring at modern architecture, there is not much to do there. Just lots and lots of over paid and under worked government employees who think they are part of some aristocracy. Good luck there.

Overpaid and under worked government employees - is there any other kind?
